What is the Climate Camp? Our self-understanding.

What is that?

At the end of September the first Austrian Climate Camp will take place.
The Climate Camp is an important instrument for international networking
and the strengthening of the Austrian climate justice movement. The camp
will provide space to share ideas, interests, and knowledge, and should
also be a place of inspiration. The camp is a place where people can
grow together and work out creative actions and strategies for a
socio-ecological transformation. The program includes workshops on many
different topics, interesting presentations, discussions, and of course
the important aspect of planning and organizing for actions.

What is it about?

Air traffic is the central topic for the Climate Camp in Austria. The
goal is to increase the discourse about “soft mobility” and to stop the
construction of the third runway at the airport in Schwechat (Vienna).
Very few people know details about the construction of the third runway
and its long-term negative impacts on the climate. With the Climate Camp
we will directly pressure the “Flughafen Wien AG”, to not build the
third runway. With this central topic the Austrian Climate Camp joins
numerus international protest movements, which work to stop airport
expansions and it also supports joint networking. On October 1^st a
global action day under the Slogan: “Stay grounded. Aviation growth
cancelled due to climate change” will take place, and there are actions
planned at Schwechat as well.

How does it work?

The camp is a self-organized space, where alternative practices can be
lived and experienced. A “Volksküche” people’s kitchen will provide
everyone with food made out of, if possible, regional and seasonal
ingredients. In addition, we will build our own compost toilets, and try
to stay away from fossil fuel energy. We want to keep hierarchies at a
minimum during the camp and for that reason all necessary decisions will
be made with a grassroots democratic model. It isn’t about majority
rules, but instead we try to find solutions which don’t have any strong,
argued opposition from the attendees.

Active and responsible camp attendees are a big part of successful
self-organization. As much as possible, the camp should be shaped and
supported by all attendees. We expect support with all necessary tasks
and welcome everyone to actively participate in the program creation and
organization on-site. Let’s turn the camp into a colorful, open and
exciting space for people to meet and a place where climate justice as
well as sustainable mobility are in the spotlight!

The orga-team sees itself responsible to provide the necessary framework
and conditions, so everyone can create and shape the Climate Camp together.

However, the camp is no place for racism, right populism, sexism or any
other form of discrimination. Refugees welcome.

System Change, not Climate Change!
