How to make Beautiful Trouble: An Introduction to the Arts of Creative Activism

Workshop by John Jordan from the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination, brought to you by System Change, not Climate Change!

Sunday March 1st (whole day, starting at 10:00) – including nice vegan breakfast, lunch and dinner. Admission free, donations very welcome!

All forms of action emerged from imaginations, the idea of a school strike, a civil disobedience blockade, the clown army or a die in, all at one point were new forms, created by rebels fighting for justice . But so often activists repeat the same old rituals of action over and over again and forget that we all have the capacity to collectively create trouble that could be even more beautiful, effective and most of all unexpected.

This workshop, for activists and artists, will enable you to share tools and principles of creative resistance and gain confidence in your capacity to design and take part in new forms of action that are politically effective and poetically powerful. The workshop uses popular education techniques and games. It will be followed by an illustrated talk about the work of the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination and a short film about the successful decade long resistance against the construction of an airport in the ZAD (zone á défendre), close to Nantes.

If you are someone who wants to explore the pleasure and magic that occurs when you smudge the line between art and activism then this workshop is for you.

John Jordan
Labelled a “Domestic Extremist” by the police, and”a magician of rebellion” by the press, John Jordan has spent the last 25 years merging art and activism. Working in various settings from Museums to squatted social centres, international theatre festivals to climate camps, from organising choreographies of rebellion to writing a BBC radio play for today, he co-founded direct action movements Reclaim the Streets and the Clown Army. He Co-edited the book “We Are Everywhere: the irresistible rise of global anti-capitalism” and co-wrote “The Users Guide to demanding the Impossible” (with Gavin Grindon) and the film/book “Les Sentiers de L’utopie” (with Isabelle Fremeaux).

He now co-facilitates the Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination (Labofii), with Isabelle Fremeaux. Infamous for fermenting mass disobedience on bicycles during a climate summit, throwing snowballs at bankers, launching a rebel raft regatta to shut down a coal power station and refusing to be censored by the fossil fuel sponsored Tate Modern, the Labofii now lives on the ZAD of Notre-dame-des-Landes, “a territory lost to the republic” according to the French government, where an international airport project was recently abandoned after 50 years of struggle.

System Change, not Climate Change!
SCNCC is a Climate Justice group operating in Graz and Vienna. It recognizes that our current economic and political systems are the problem and that real climate solutions can only be advanced by confronting the elites and by creating radical alternatives to business as usual. If we want a livable future, direct action and non-violent mass disobedience are the most effective (and fun) tools to bring about the fundamental transformations we need. Joining SC is easy. Just attend one of our meetings and be part of our group.
